Ultrasound Q&A

What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound is a safe, noninvasive imaging test that uses sound waves to create pictures of the inside of the body. Unlike X-rays and CT scans, ultrasounds don’t use radiation.

At Care Rite, PLLC, ultrasounds help the team evaluate blood flow, organs, and other soft tissues to better understand your health concerns.

When might you need an ultrasound?

Ultrasounds are helpful for many different reasons, including:

  • Monitoring pregnancy and fetal development
  • Examining the heart and blood vessels
  • Checking for gallstones, kidney stones, or liver problems
  • Evaluating abdominal pain
  • Detecting fluid buildup or inflammation
  • Guiding certain medical procedures, such as steroid injections

Because ultrasounds provide real-time images, they are very useful for diagnosing and monitoring a wide range of conditions.

What can you expect during an ultrasound test?

When you visit Care Rite, PLLC, for an ultrasound, your provider asks you to lie down while they apply a special gel to your skin. This gel helps sound waves travel through your body.

They use a handheld device called a transducer that gently moves over the area requiring examination. The sound waves the transducer emits bounce back to create images on a screen.

An ultrasound procedure usually takes 15–30 minutes, depending on the type of exam.

Is an ultrasound safe?

Yes. Ultrasound is considered one of the safest imaging methods available. While modern X-rays are very safe because they use minimal radiation, ultrasound doesn’t expose you to any radiation at all. This makes it especially useful for children and pregnant women.

The ultrasound test is painless, and you won’t sense anything other than the transducer on your skin. Most patients feel perfectly comfortable throughout the process.

How are ultrasound results used?

Ultrasound results can help guide diagnoses, determine the cause of symptoms, or monitor how a particular condition is progressing. In some cases, they also help the Care Rite, PLLC, team decide whether you’d benefit from more testing or treatment.

Care Rite, PLLC, offers in-house ultrasound testing at two of its four offices, so you don’t have to travel to a separate facility. Whether you need imaging for pregnancy, pain, or other health concerns, they provide accurate, compassionate care in one location.
